im writing this essay on Kierkegaard and for one of the first times it doesnt seem like vague junk that has no impact on my life but rather somthing that actually makes sense. of course, im not going to quote the meaningful parts, just the one funny one. one of his arguments if that a life sould be as interesting as possible.
this is what he wrote on the subject of boringness:
"Boredom is the root of all evil.
This can be traced back to the very beginning of the world. The gods were bored; therefore they created human beings. Adam was bored because he was alone; therefore Eve was created. Since that momnet, boredom entered the world and grew in quantity in exact proportion to the growth of population. Adam was bored alone; then Adam and Eve were bored together; then Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel were bored en famille. After that, the population of the world increased and the nations were bored en masse. To amuse themselves, they hit upon the notion of building a tower so high that it would reach the sky. This notion is just as borin as the tower was high and is a terrible demonstration of how boredom had gained the upper hand."
i thought that was great when i read it and i still do which is why i took the time to write it out.
another less funny quote that has been said before in other ways is this "It is not longer a matter of what happens to you; it is a matter of what you do with what happens to you." which i thought was great because it gets rid of the people who spout out the horrible things that have happened in their life as if this should earn them respect. like the quote said, its what you do with what happens that matters.
and on an ending note, this is in response to Mike's blog:
im not sure what was meant by we should all strive to BE something or what being something is to mike... but the thing is, perhaps to one person BEING something is having an impact on the world or becoming famous. the next person might strive to simply be love and love back. the next might want to build a log cabin in the middle of the forest and dedicate their life to "finding themselves". the truth is, a person who may have seemed to have done nothing in their life to one person might actually be the happiest person they know. not everyone want fame and fortune, some just want to be happy(and no, happiness does not necessarily come from those things). yes, i agree, we should all strive for something but just because we arent all striving for the same thing does not make a person apathetic. this all comes down to the one thing i CANNOT stress enough... you NEVER know the whole story. you dont know whats behind the scenes, so to say. you think you do, but thats rarely the case.
so, enough philosophy for one night...
